The Peak District: Not so Peaky but Very Pretty

Our next stop was the poorly named Peak district. It really just has some small round hills and some exposed rock but has very few actual peaks. Nonetheless the countryside is made even prettier by the hills and the villages are equally gorgeous. We spent a day at Cambridge University since it was on our way. So far we feel so comfortable in the UK and I’m feeling much better about driving on the left (haven’t hit anything yet!)

Punting on the river Cam! Cambridge comes from the Roman bridge that crosses the river Cam. It’s a short trip of less than a mile but very nice on this sunny day. The wooden bridge is called Mathematical Bridge and their are a million theories as to it’s name and origin. The truth is no-one really knows.
Ivy covered St. John’s is one of 31 autonomous colleges at Cambridge University. You actually apply to a college but professors can teach at multiple colleges
King’s College is perhaps the most impressive since Henry VIII paid for the chapel to be the finest in the world. The Sistine Chapel is the main rival.
We liked Cambridge but didn’t love it. It’s a little too large and super trafficky and most of the colleges are closed
We stayed in small but adorable Ashford-in-the-Water

We ate at this pub twice. It was very close to our cottage. British food has has gotten so much better in 25 years
