The North? York

Our next stop was in York which is considered the North even though it’s only about 200 miles from London. Although the center of York is touristy, the rest of it is quiet and feels normal. We really are still going slow and avoiding feeling busy and instead experiencing what it would be like to live in the town we are in.

York was built by Romans; occupied by the Anglo-Saxons, and finally Normans (William the Conqueror). It was known as England’s second city for most of its history
York minster is the biggest tourist draw in York. That’s emperor Constantine
It’s huge and has a large portion of England’s stained glass
York like many major European cities started off Roman. At least three emperors lived here and two emperor’s died here. Constantine the Pale (the green in this picture) died here.

Like most English cathedrals a central tower was added
15 kings ruled during the 252 year construction of the cathedral from 1220 – 1472. Officially it is called the Cathedral and Metropolitical Church of St Peter in York
York minster has a team of dedicated stone masons to keep up with repairs
This is the Merchant Taylors guild hall from 1415 which we saw on our tour because a guild member was luckily walking by and let us in. Cool history everywhere!
