The Cornish Kingdom: Southwest England

Our last small trip before returning to London was to the region of Cornwall. Cornwall was surprisingly autonomous for much of Britain’s history. Cornwall even had its own language which didn’t go extinct until the late 1700s and is now revived. We had never been south of London until this trip so this was a new area to explore.

St. Michael’s Mount is very similar to Mont Saint Michele in Normandy France. In fact, it was built by the same order of monks
Its French cousin can now be reached with a new causeway all the time. St Michael’s Mount can only be reached at low tide. You can see the ride coming in over the causeway
The castle was surprisingly nice. The St. Aubin family has owned it since the 15th century and currently live on the lower floors of the castle.
We visited Saint Michael’s Mount at low tide and enjoyed it a lot. It’s not Mont Saint Michele but it is still a very nice place

We stopped at some of the coastal towns like Boscastle with its amazing harbor. They have huge tidal changes. The boats will be floating at high tide
Beside seafood, Cornwall is know for Pasties (pronounced Past-ee) which are filled with beef, potato, and onion. Yes they were really good!!
Tintagel is a ruin but perched on a beautiful rugged harbor
Karen always wanted to visit because of the book Mists of Avalon where it is the place King Arthur is conceived to Igraine and Uther Pendragon
There is a sea-cave called Merlin’s Cave so…
