Rural Japan Shirakawa-Go

Our second to last stop was different in that we weren’t going to a town at at all but a village in the mountains of Japan. It’s a popular day trip from Kanazawa or Shirakawa but less people spend the night there which is what we did. It was really enjoyable and such a different feel to what we know as Japan. We only spent one night but it was really worthwhile

It’s all about the valley and the thatched roofs at Shirakawa. It was isolated for a long time due to the mountainous terrain so a unique lifestyle developed over time. It’s really cool to see the differences and similarities
The fall colors made the river’s blue-green stand out even more
It’s pretty idyllic on a sunny day and still pretty on a rainy day. We had both
It’s now very much a tourist village but life still revolves around the river and agriculture in this little valley

Beautiful and tranquil but hard on the knees
We stayed at one of the farmhouse-ryokan in a traditional room. It was beautiful and interesting but not really comfortable or delicious. It was a good experience but one night was enough

There was a museum village of 26 thatched homes across the river which allowed us to sample village accommodations but it was mostly about the prettiness.
Since it had rained the previous day, the thatch rooms were steaming in the sun. Scary until you realize it’s not fire
