Back to Kenya

After Ngorongoro crater we went back to Amboseli National Park in Kenya for one night before returning to Nairobi. The main draws at Amboseli are elephants and Mount Kilimanjaro. It’s also on the way so it breaks up what would be a 10+ hour drive. Amboseli is weird, parts of it are super dry and just a couple of miles away there are marshes and lakes. There was some disease killing a lot of the herbivores which was shocking to see but part of nature. The hyenas and vultures couldn’t even keep up. We did see some elephants and caught a few glimpses of the mountain so we were satisfied with the end of our safari and it was sobering to see the brutal side of nature. We spent a couple of days in Nairobi so we could do a bit of sightseeing and get ready for our flight to Egypt.

There were lots of nice elephants in a new setting but Amboseli was our least favorite park
Children in Kenya and Tanzania are so cute! Our safari vehicle got a lot of waves and smiles
Almost all schools have uniforms which makes the poor and less poor kids blend better
On our day tour of Nairobi we visited a Giraffe Research Center. It was good but we had fed giraffes at our local zoo back home so it wasn’t anything new.
The David Sheldrick Elephant Sanctuary was really awesome. Tons of baby elephants being bottle fed, playing in the mud, and coming over to us to get a rub. That was definitely fun!
Our final stop in Sub-Saharan (non-deserty) Africa was for Karen. We visited Karen Blixen’s home. She wrote the book “Out of Africa” which detailed her life and struggles here. The book and subsequent Meryl Streep/Robert Redford movie are both favorites of my Karen. The town surrounding the home is also called Karen. It was a good way to finish up!
