Our First Swiss City: Lucerne

Lucerne was our first real stop in Switzerland after our one night stop in Appenzell. It is a tourist destination and a real swiss city at the same time. It was clean, efficient, and orderly but was also very expensive and inflexible. All grocery stores close on Sunday and holidays and most stores close by 7:00 PM every day. Restaurants usually close their kitchens between 2:00 PM and 5:00 PM. It is still a beautiful small city with a cool historical center.

The city is centered on the outlet of the Reuss river into Lake Lucerne. This is the Kapellbrucke or chapel bridge and the water tower. Part of Lucerne’s medieval fortifications.
This was my favorite site in Lucerne. A tribute to the Swiss Guard soldiers (over 700 of them) that died during the French revolution. They were hired to protect the French monarchs and fought until the last man in many cases. The lion is pierced by a spear but still protects the French Monarchy Shield while the Swiss Shield lies nearby. I just though the pose and expression were amazing.
