Weird Things About Appenzell Switzerland

The smallest canton in Switzerland by population is Appenzell. This is a place that hangs on to traditions. Cows are taken to the high meadows and back through town roads on a regular basis, women didn’t get to vote at the local level until 1991, and on the last Sunday in April of each year, they practice Landsgemeinde, where the citizens gather in the town square and openly vote for their canton representatives, judges, and laws…while wearing swords. Cats stalk big prey in Appenzell.
Weird poles in fields. Actually ghost buildings (outlines) required by Swiss building codes to allow residents to see how a building affects the landscape. The are required for a period of time before construction
